GLENCOE TO PERTH BY CANOE

5 days
£850pp

Glencoe To Perth By Canoe

Glencoe To Perth By Canoe

Using canoes, we launch at the top of Glencoe, overlooked by its magnificent mountains. We make our way across the wilderness of Rannoch Moor. We paddle between lochs and lochans using linking rivers. As we travel down the system of lochs and rivers they grow in size, passing through the amazing landscape of the central highlands before reaching the river Tummel, then the river Tay and following it to Perth. This trip includes large areas of open water and white water rapids, so our guides will coach you in the necessary skills to complete this challenging journey.

ITINERARY

DAY 1
Moor of Rannoch Hotel

Moor of Rannoch Hotel

Travel in our private van from Perth to our "put in" in Glencoe. We leave the A82 Glencoe to Glen Orchy road behind as we paddle across loch Ba and then use the river Ba to reach Loch Laidon. We camp for the night or stay in the Moor of Rannoch hotel.
DAY 2
In the morning after breakfast we paddle down the grade 3 mountain river the Garbh Ghaoir into Loch Eigheach. After portaging a dam we either paddle or pole down the River Gaur, which varies in water level depending upon release from the dam. When we reach loch Rannoch, if the wind is blowing from the west, its predominant direction, we sail the canoes the 16km to Kinloch Rannoch where again you can choose to stay in the hotel or camp.
DAY 3
After breakfast it’s onto a short, easy river that flows into Loch Dunalastair then we paddle the upper river Tummel which has grade 2-3 white water and a harder grade 4-5 waterfall which most will portage. We enter loch Tummel and find camp or another excellent hotel depending upon your choice of accommodation.
DAY 4
Glencoe To Perth By Canoe

Glencoe To Perth By Canoe

We finish paddling loch Tummel and after portaging the dam at it’s end, either paddle or pole the lower Tummel. This contains grade 3 and 4 drops which can be portaged and in open canoes most will portage the class 4 drops, especially the final water fall into Loch Faskally, which is used for white water rafting. If this section is on high release we will portage this short section of river. If you would like, we can come back to this section or other great Scottish white water rivers with our rafts and take you down all the drops in a more suitable craft. Check our extensions.
After Loch Faskally we pass Pitlochry and then finish off paddling the lower Tummel which is now an easy grade but much larger in volume. This section of the Tummel is one of the major tributaries of the River Tay which we soon join and descend as far as Dunkeld, a lovely village with ancient buildings and set in a stunning location. We spend the night in a hotel or again camp nearby.
DAY 5
Quality Hotel in Perth

Quality Hotel in Perth

The final day of the journey is the classic big water river day, descending the Tay, which has the largest outflow of any river in Britain. In contrast to the early days on mountain streams, this river is wide with good grade 2-3 rapids including the famous Stanley to Thislebrigg white water section, which by now everyone will have the skills to enjoy. This is a long day with the water doing most of the work, and eventually we reach our goal, the take out in Perth, just before the river becomes tidal and enters the Firth of Tay and then the sea.

Meet up and finish point for this trip is Perth where we recommend the 3 star Quality hotel Perth which is beside the River Tay and offers rooms at around £45pppn. You can find this and other Perth hotels at www.activereservations.com or for budget accommodation contact the Wester Caputh Independent backpackers 01738 710449 for accommodation at the start and end of your trip. These nights’ accommodation are not included in the trip price, as you may just be travelling the day before or after the trip, we can however arrange reservations if you ask us at the time of booking.

On day one your canoe guides will meet you at 9am and you will travel in our minibus to Glencoe to start the trip. All necessary canoes and related equipment are provided, along with camping gear if you choose that option. The hotel accommodation includes breakfast but not evening meals. We provide packed lunches during the day. On the camping version of this trip we provide 3 meals a day in the form of lightweight ration packs so that you can carry a week’s food with you. If you wish to vary the diet we can visit good pubs for evening meals, on some nights, which you pay at the time. Alternatively you can opt to self cater and self camp. If you are not sure whether to go for hotels or camping, you should note that the camping is basic and in wild locations. The weather in Scotland is unpredictable and insect populations can impinge on comfort so this should really only be chosen as the preferred option if you have previous wild camping experience. The hotels offer luxury and a comfortable trip.

TRIP EXTENSIONS

Scale Schiehallion - £125pp
Schiehallion

Schiehallion

Schiehallion is the Munro which we pass below during the main trip. It is a prominent mountain that stands alone with great views across the rest of the highlands. The name means ‘the fairy hill of the Caledonians’. It is a particularly attractive mountain which also has the claim to fame that it was the location of the first ever measurement of the mass of the earth by the then astronomer-royal. If everyone on your trip adds this extension then we will do it on route. Alternatively, if a minority choose this extension, we will travel back to it at the end of the trip using the minibus.
